Emergency Services
Sidmouth Lifeboat Station is a fully self-funded independent lifeboat charity in East Devon, covering an area of approximately 150 square miles of sea between Axmouth and Budleigh Salterton. Their volunteer crew are on service 24 hours a day, 365 days per year and respond to Coastguard 999 pager requests for emergency assistance in the water and along the coast. During 2024/5 the lifeboat station underwent an extension and major renovation.
Studio Four Architects were selected to design and project manage the build. With their experience in lifeboat station construction, they recommended in the tender the use of Degafloor as the gold standard for the boathouse and RIB store flooring.
Skinner Construction, who carried out the extension and renovation, is one of the largest construction companies in Devon, delivering projects for local public sector and commercial clients, as well as private individuals. RESYN were approached by the construction company to tender for the flooring works at Sidmouth Lifeboat Station and successfully secured the project following a competitive tender process.
The resin flooring was required within key operational areas including the main Arctic Boat Hall, which includes a small shop, and two further RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) stores. These spaces play a vital role in the day-to-day operation of the lifeboat station and therefore required a flooring solution capable of withstanding demanding conditions.
Due to the challenging nature of a working lifeboat station, with exposure to water, heavy equipment, vehicles, and frequent foot traffic, careful consideration was given to the flooring specification. RESYN recommended and installed the Degafloor FB system in Saffron Yellow, a solution that has demonstrated excellent performance at other lifeboat stations and within similar environments.
The slip-resistant properties of the system make it particularly well suited to wet environments, helping to reduce the risk of slips while maintaining a robust surface capable of enduring constant operational use. The fast-curing MMA system allows the flooring to be operational within just 2 hours of installation, minimising disruption to the emergency service and other contractors on site.
The completed flooring installation provides Sidmouth Lifeboat Station with a hard-wearing, safe, and practical surface tailored to the unique demands of its facilities. RESYN worked closely with Skinner Construction to ensure the flooring installation aligned with the overall programme and operational requirements of the site.
Comment from Sidmouth Lifeboat Station: “The Degafloor installation was carried out by RESYN installers over a couple of days. The finished flooring is of a professional standard, it looks and feels hard wearing, non-slip and safe. Everything we wanted and needed for our emergency service facilities. The colour is vibrant which adds a fresh, bold new look to the public access area too. The boat hall also has a small shop which is run by a group of retired volunteers, welcoming the public in to learn about our service. The original flooring was concrete, and you could feel the cold through your feet. This new flooring has provided noticeable insulation under foot, perfect for the colder days and makes a big difference to the comfort of our volunteers. An added benefit we hadn’t anticipated!”
