Royal Holloway University of London decided to modernise its facilities and redesign the Student Union with brand new floor resin.
The main aim of the project was to improve the overall student experience at Royal Holloway by creating a fresh and exciting space. The University used student feedback to help identify the key priorities, including image and décor.
As design was a major factor in the redevelopment, the floor resin finish had to be aesthetically flexible to match the design scheme. The Degafloor Flake system for the project offers excellent aesthetic flexibility, providing a finish that can be adapted to suit any design requirements.
Following meetings with the designer on the project, Inner Space Associates Ltd, it was agreed that black, white and grey would be used in different ratios in different areas.
The floor resin was installed in the bar, circulation, reception and auditorium areas and totalled approximately 500m2. The design incorporates bold, block colours on the walls complemented with blocked markings on the floor in black, white and grey colour variations. The areas were demarcated using stainless steel trim. This required intricate detailing. We maintained a high standard to achieve a professional and seamless finish.
The refurbishment had to be completed over the summer vacation in time to welcome the new students in September, so timing was critical. RESYN worked alongside the main contractor, Russell Cawberry to install the floors to a systematic schedule. The MMA-based floors are fully cured within just two hours of installation. This allowed for a rolling programme where Russell Cawberry could continue working in the areas in a short period.
