Emergency Services
Cambridge Fire Station is part of Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service, responsible for protecting the communities of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Operating across 27 stations, the service includes a mix of wholetime and on-call locations, all requiring reliable, high-performance facilities to support emergency response.
The existing resin floor coating within the appliance bays was in need of significant repair. As a result, the Estates team at Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service approached us to carry out a full restoration of the flooring within the station.
As a new client, the team at Cambridge Fire Station wanted reassurance of our capabilities before proceeding. To support this, they visited Bedford Fire Station, where we successfully completed the flooring within the appliance bay. Following positive feedback and seeing the quality of our workmanship firsthand, we were selected to deliver the project.
The project involved the refurbishment of all four appliance bays, covering a total area of 510m².
Achieving a long-lasting result requires thorough preparation of the existing substrate. The floor was mechanically prepared using grinding and shot blasting techniques to remove the failed coating and to create a clean, well-profiled surface to ensure a strong bond for the new resin system. As with all fire stations, operations needed to continue throughout the refurbishment. The station remained fully operational and on call, so it was essential that disruption was kept to an absolute minimum. To manage this, we carried out the works in carefully planned phases, ensuring that no more than one appliance bay was out of use at any given time.
We installed the Degafloor FB system (MMA) resin solution that we have successfully used in numerous fire stations. This system is well suited to appliance bays due to its durability, slip-resistant properties, and ability to withstand heavy vehicle traffic. A key advantage of the system is its rapid curing time. Within just two hours of installation, each bay was ready for full use, allowing the fire appliances to be rehoused within each area shortly after. This fast turnaround was crucial in maintaining the station’s essential operations.
The completed installation provides a durable, high-performance flooring solution that meets the demanding requirements of a busy fire station. By combining careful preparation, phased working, and a fast-curing system, we were able to deliver a high-quality finish while ensuring the station remained fully operational throughout the project.
This project further demonstrates our expertise in delivering resin flooring solutions within live emergency service environments, where reliability, safety, and minimal disruption are critical.
Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service commented:
“From an operational perspective, we feel that the project went very well from start to finish. As a busy operational fire station our number one priority is to keep our fire appliances on the run and to ensure that any disruption at the station is kept to a minimum.
As soon as the contractors came on site to undertake the work, we felt confident that they fully understood the need for the station to always remain fully operational. The team worked in a well-organised way and always kept disruption to a minimum. They followed the schedules that had been devised for each appliance bay, which meant the phased approach was successful and minimised any disruption.
The contractors worked hard and the turnaround time for each appliance bay was quick which allowed us to manage our fire appliances. The finished floor looks very good, and the quality is an excellent standard.”
