Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, which has 14 stations within their estate, approached RESYN looking for a durable, anti-slip flooring solution for Bedford Fire Station.
The station is a full-time crewed fire station and is home to the Northern Area Office, as well as Bedfordshire Police and Mid Shires Search and Rescue, therefore the solution needed to be installed with minimal disruption.
Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service were looking for a flooring system that was durable enough to withstand the heavy loads of the fire engines, as well as having anti-slip properties.
As with any fire station project, time was a crucial factor. For security reasons, the fire engines cannot be out of the appliance bays overnight, therefore the installation needed to completed with minimal disruption to allow the engines to be securely stored back in the appliance bays.
After a site survey to assess the environment and the condition of the tiled substrate, it was decided the Degafloor QTA system would best meet the project requirements. Whilst Degafloor can securely bond to tiled substrates, the survey highlighted that many of them had debonded and therefore RESYN removed these to prevent any future issues.
The fast-curing time of this MMA resin system enabled the fire engines to be parked back in the bays within just 2 hours, ensuring disruption was kept to a minimum. This system also provides excellent slip resistance, which is necessary within a station environment, where there are often water spills from the hoses and the crew who need to act quickly.
Degafloor Premier Line marking system was used to create the precise yellow lines to assist with the demarcation of the appliance bays. The system is formulated with MMA resin to ensure a secure bond to the Degafloor QTA System.
The installation met the requirements identified within the site survey; durability, ensuring safety for the crew and minimal disruption to the stations operations while the project was ongoing.
Aaron Fuller, Estates & Facilities Support Officer at Bedfordshire Fire & Rescue Service commented:
“RESYN have now completed a number of installations across Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service’s estate. RESYN have consistently provided excellent customer service , with high levels of communication throughout the installation process. A number of Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service’s floors were becoming tired and showing their age. Following extensive repairs over many years, it was decided that the tiled floors were to be replaced to a resin system, similar to that of other Fire & Rescue Services across the UK. The team at RESYN were professional and enabled us to achieve a long-term, durable solution.
With a unique environment of fire appliances, van and pedestrians, there are a number of requirements. The team at RESYN provided us a suitable solution that is slip resistant and hard-wearing to enable us to meet all the requirements. The team also provided us with information for the care of the floor to ensure a long-lasting, durable solution.”
