Royal Holloway, University of London decided it was time to modernise its Student Union facilities, including a resin coating for the bar flooring and surrounding areas. We improved the overall student experience at Royal Holloway by creating a fresh and exciting space. University feedback from the students helped identify the key priorities. The décor was a featured preference.
Resin coating design for bar flooring
Design was a major factor in the union flooring redevelopment. We had to be flexible with the aesthetics to meet the design scheme. The Degafloor resin coating flake system we chose for the project offers excellent aesthetic flexibility. The finish can be adapted to suit any design requirements.
Following meetings with Inner Space Associates Ltd, the designer for the project, we chose three variations of black, white and grey for the different areas.
Design-led flooring
We installed the resin coating flooring in the main bar, circulation, reception and auditorium areas. This total area was approximately 500m2. The design incorporated bold, block colours on the walls complemented with blocked markings on the floor in contrasting black, white and grey colour variations. The areas were demarcated using stainless steel trim which requires intricate detailing and high standards to maintain and achieve a professional and seamless finish.
We completed the refurbishment over the summer break, so it was ready to welcome the new students in September. Timings in this project were critical. RESYN worked with the main contractor, Russell Cawberry to install the floors on a schedule. We cured the MMA-based floors within just two hours of installation. We worked on a rolling programme where Russell Cawberry continued working in the areas over a short period.
