Installation requirements for the garage workshop

An independent, family-owned premium car retail group with multiple showrooms has built a strong reputation over more than 50 years in the motor-trading industry. Recognised for supplying quality vehicles and delivering exceptional customer service, their sites are designed to reflect the standards expected of a modern automotive retailer.

As part of ongoing improvements at their Peterborough workshop, the business required a specialist flooring contractor capable of installing a durable, high-performance resin system. The new floor needed to elevate the appearance of the workshop, withstand the heavy traffic of busy service bays, and provide chemical resistance to cope with inevitable oil and petrol spills. The existing floor area measured 328.8 m² and was originally finished with ceramic tiles.

Why RESYN?

During the initial site survey, RESYN identified that the existing tiles would need to be fully removed before installation of the new resin system. Once removed, oil contamination was discovered within the concrete substrate – a common issue in automotive environments. To ensure long-term performance and prevent adhesion failures, RESYN applied an oil-tolerant primer designed specifically for contaminated substrates.

Following preparation, RESYN recommended the high-performance KDR Epocoat HB epoxy coating system, chosen for its durability, chemical resistance and professional finish. To enhance both aesthetics and functionality, the client selected a sapphire-blue delineation to highlight the service-bay areas.

Because the installation took place during the winter months and the Epocoat HB system requires a minimum curing temperature of 20°C, temporary heaters were used to maintain consistent temperatures. This ensured correct curing, allowed the project to remain on schedule and be completed within the planned 7-day programme.

Alex Forrester, Technical Sales Manager at RESYN commented: “This installation came with a few more challenges than usual. We removed all of the existing tiles and found oil contamination within the substrate, so getting the preparation right was essential. We used a multi-head grinder to remove the remaining adhesive, then applied an oil-tolerant primer to ensure a reliable bond. From there, we installed two coats of KDR Epoxy HB, giving the client a professional finish suitable for a busy workshop environment.”
